Step 1: Choose your artifact Select a public artifact that you resist. It can be a billboard, sign, public notice, plaque, sculpture, or advertisement. It cannot be something private, such as a personal email. Step 2: Analysis What is the intended purpose of the piece? For example, the intended purpose of the Statue of Liberty is to be a symbol of freedom and hospitality to all refugees. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Identify its rhetorical strategies. How is it communicating what it intends to communicate? For example, you could argue that the Statue of Liberty uses the symbol of the torch to communicate welcome, as a lighthouse offers light during a storm, so to the torch offers the light of freedom to refugees. Write 50 to 100 words about the inherent contradictions that you observe in your artifact. Brainstorm how you might make the hypocrisy visible. How might you change your artifact so that the oppressive nature or inherent contradiction be made more visible to the audience. For example, you could change the poem at the bottom of the Statue of Liberty to indicate the legacy of racism the statue ignores or to point out the current crisis around Syrian refugees. Jam the rhetoric of the artifact. Document your jam with video, photography, and/or a personal narrative of 250 – 300 words, describing your experience. Step 5: Reflect Write a 250-word reflection on your process. This reflection can be a description of your process and what you learned about rhetorical strategies, culture jamming, and dominant ideologies. Be sure to connect your reflection to the assigned readings, citing them in APA style. Your project will be graded according to the following rubric. PROCESS – 5 points Engages an appropriate artifact. Demonstrates evidence of the assigned process, which must include ALL steps. FORM – Adheres to the assigned form, which includes meeting the assigned word limits for each step and providing documentation 5 points of the jamming process. CREATIVITY – 5 points Demonstrates creativity with regards to how the assignment engages with the concept of culture jamming, drawing inspiration from the assigned readings. RHETORICAL ANALYSIS – 5 points Demonstrates awareness of various rhetorical strategies and a thoughtful analysis of those strategies. Employs a meaningful disruption of the intended rhetoric of the artifact. WRITING CONVENTIONS – 5 points Adheres to proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation throughout the assignment steps, as appropriate to its rhetorical intentions and APA style.
